Police officers see more downtrodden family situations than anyone should ever have to and know firsthand that there is a need in our communities for kindness, charity and cheer during the holidays.

Recognizing those families who are having trouble and bringing happiness to those children at Christmas is the goal of the Officer Collin Rose Memorial’s annual Operation Blue Santa campaign.

The Foundation honors the late Wayne State University Police Officer Collin Rose. He was murdered on a street investigation in November 2016. Rose was engaged to be married and was looking to grow his family.

“Our fallen hero Collin Rose loved children and the holidays,” Foundation President Chris Powell said. “This was an important campaign for us to develop with his family and we hope to brighten Christmas Day for deserving children in need.”

In 2021 the Foundation brightened Christmas for seven children in Detroit, two children in Clinton Township, one child in Muskegon, one child in New Baltimore and one child in St. Clair Shores.

In 2020 the Foundation helped Santa provide toys and clothing to five children in Battle Creek, four children in Dearborn, one in Grosse Pointe Woods, two children in Muskegon, five children in Royal Oak, five children in St. Clair Shores, three children in Eastpointe, six children in Clinton Township and six children in New Baltimore.

Each year the Foundation budgets to support ten children and hopes to gain the support and goodwill of residents, business and civic groups to possibly adopt more families. Selected communities are reflective of where our fallen hero lived, worked and had a direct connection.

“This is a perfect way to give back to the communities Collin loved,” said his mother Karen Rose.
